Overview

2022 AH2 is a very small asteroid whose orbit approaches the orbit of Earth but does not cross it. NASA JPL has classified 2022 AH2 as a "Near Earth Asteroid" due to its orbit's proximity to Earth, but it is not considered potentially hazardous because computer simulations have not indicated any imminent likelihood of future collision.

2022 AH2 orbits the sun every 547 days (1.50 years), coming as close as 1.08 AU and reaching as far as 1.54 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, 2022 AH2 is probably between 0.032 to 0.071 kilometers in diameter, making it a small to average asteroid, very roughly comparable in size to a school bus or smaller.

Close Approaches

2022 AH2's orbit is 0.15 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is a wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.

2022 AH2 has 4 close approaches predicted in the coming decades:

Date Distance from Earth (km) Velocity (km/s)
Jan. 14, 2019 25,525,282 9.550
Jan. 15, 2022 23,271,925 9.695
Jan. 16, 2025 22,397,169 9.909
Jan. 18, 2028 22,938,926 10.192

Images and Observations

2022 AH2's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Jan. 6, 2022. It was last officially observed on Jan. 28, 2022. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 28 observations used to determine its orbit.
