Comet 166P/NEAT is an object whose orbit is approximately between Jupiter and Neptune. NASA JPL has not classified 166P/NEAT as potentially hazardous because its orbit does not bring it close to Earth.
166P/NEAT orbits the sun every 18,900 days (51.75 years), coming as close as 8.56 AU and reaching as far as 19.20 AU from the sun.
166P/NEAT's orbit is 7.58 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is an extremely wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.
Orbital simulations conducted by NASA JPL's CNEOS do not show any close approaches to Earth.
166P/NEAT's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Aug. 27, 2001. It was last officially observed on Feb. 28, 2009. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 168 observations used to determine its orbit.
