Makemake is a dwarf planet whose orbit extends beyond the orbit of Neptune. NASA JPL has not classified Makemake as potentially hazardous because its orbit does not bring it close to Earth.
Makemake orbits the sun every 111,000 days (303.90 years), coming as close as 37.78 AU and reaching as far as 52.80 AU from the sun. Based on its brightness and the way it reflects light, Makemake is probably between 2927.891 to 6546.964 kilometers in diameter, making it the largest asteroid/dwarf planet, very roughly comparable in size to the U.S. state of Alaska.
The rotation of Makemake has been observed. It completes a rotation on its axis every 22.83 hours.
Makemake's orbit is 36.90 AU from Earth's orbit at its closest point. This means that there is an extremely wide berth between this asteroid and Earth at all times.
Orbital simulations conducted by NASA JPL's CNEOS do not show any close approaches to Earth.
Makemake's orbit is determined by observations dating back to Jan. 29, 1955. It was last officially observed on July 4, 2023. The IAU Minor Planet Center records 3,980 observations used to determine its orbit.
